GM Full-Size Hybrids To Start Production In Arlington Plant

This week, hybrid versions of GM’s full-size SUVs will begin production at the General Motors assembly plant in Arlington.

The two full-size SUVs are the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon Hybrids use a two-mode electric motor system to power their gas engines. As an addition to these two, there will also be a hybrid version of the Cadillac Escalade. These vehicles due for production will make up about 10 percent of the 20,000-vehicle production of Arlington every year.

The Arlington plant is the only plant owned by GM that produces SUV hybrids. These hybrid vehicles are expected to be available in early January.

Alicia Boler-Davis, the new plant manager, together with by Gov. Rick Perry and other plant officials celebrated the start of the production plant as a historic day for the Arlington plant. “Today is a tremendous day for this plant,” said Boler-Davis.

Both the Chevrolet Tahoe and the GMC Yukon hybrids can achieve a 50% fuel economy improvement in city driving with a rating of 21 miles per gallon in city driving and 22 on the highway. These models will also make use of a 6-liter V8 engine that could generate as 322 horsepower using their electric motors.
