On Chevy’s Silverado pickup truck

The General Motors Corporation (GMC) seldom releases full-size Chevrolet Trucks. Coming out with a new truck usually has a gap of about 10 years.

Last year, the Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck happens to be the second-best selling vehicle in the United States alone. With GMC Sierra at its counterpart, the Chevrolet Truck was able to reach a good 310,896 Silverados sold for the first six months of the 2007.

To date, the Chevrolet Silverado is the latest full-size pick-up truck offering of General Motors. If the Chevrolet Silverado will be rated, it will likely get an almost perfect four stars because this truck has been fully equipped. For starters, the Silverado boasts of power adjustable pedals and leather bucket seat, satellite radio, climate control, backing sonar, power sunroof, and power sliding rear window, amongst others. These sophisticated high-technology installed in the Chevrolet Silverado make this pick-up truck more like a luxury sports utility vehicle than a mean off-road Chevrolet truck.

Moving over its internal system, the Silverado takes pride in its 315-horsepower and 5.3-liter V8 engine. This mean but sophisticated pick-up truck has also been loaded with an automatic transmission, dual-range four-wheel drive and locking rear-differential. What made this Chevrolet truck more tough in its flat hood, heavy-duty package, easy-lift tailgate, elaborate cargo tie-down system and boxed frame have this truck ready to haul big loads or tow up to 8,500 pounds.

Aside from the powerful exterior of the Silverado, it is also roomy which can accommodate about six passengers – an added bonus for medium to big size families. Add to that spacious cabin is the ability of the Silverado pick-up truck to take in towing and hauling capabilities under its belt. Moreover, the interior of the Silverado are really top of the line that one would think twice about producing a smudge on the seats. There is a multitude of trim levels, even two variations of dashboards of the Silverado. Unlike many of Chevorlet’s competitors, the Silverado pick-up truck still kept the gearing level on the steering console. The Chevrolet Silverado may not be as “sporty” as a console shifter, but it is able to provide a good number of significant storage space.

The Chevrolet Silverado does not only boasts of a high-performing engine, but an equally beefed up suspension system as well. With this kind of off-road vehicle, Silverado was geared with powerful suspension to veer away those excessive motion and noise usually produced on uneven or inconsistent terrains. Moreover, maneuvering this big truck will not going to be a problem, thanks to its suspension. The full-size truck Silverado will surely have all the liberty to adjust no matter what road condition it will face – be it in a mall’s parking lot or in the outskirts of the city. This attractive Chevrolet pick-up truck can definitely run smoothly with its swift transmission and brake system.

More on the Silverado

The latest line of pick-up trucks from General Motors—the Chevrolet Silverado—is not only one of the best trucks around but is now also available for customization.

You can have your Silverado custom-made to fit your needs like Blountsville volunteer firefighter, Mike Shively. He is in need of a vehicle that can get through all types of road and weather conditions to make it easy for him to make it when emergency calls. He spotted a custom Chevrolet Silverado at the American Chevrolet Cadillac in Muncie and knew that it was the right truck to have.

He purchased the 2007 Silverado around June. It was a dream truck and its color, which is not far from traditional “fire engine red,” is a fine match for his job.

“I liked the truck as soon as I saw it at the dealership,” he said. “Its customization package includes 35-inch wheels and a six-inch suspension lift, yet it still fits in the garage.”

The truck’s tonneau cover turns the truck’s bed into a large trunk, making it an agreeable place to haul all the dirty firefighting gear.

“After a fire everything smells like smoke, so it’s better to haul the gear in the bed than inside the truck,” he said.

According to Blake Absher, assistant sales manager at American Chevrolet Cadillac, the customization package on the Shivelys’ truck can be ordered and be made on any four-wheel drive Silverado.

“In addition to the lifted suspension, the package includes 17-inch wheels, a polished billet grille and aggressive off-road tires,” he said. “Buyers can choose from three or four different wheel and tire combinations.”

Absher also adds that the custom package adds about $6,995 to the price of a Silverado. The exact price will depend on the specific modifications the buyer requests.

“All of the custom parts carry the same warranty as the truck itself,” he added. “This is a General Motors-approved conversion.”

Heintz’ 2000 Chevy Silverado

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

The story of the transformation of Forrest Heintz’ Silverado has appeared in numerous truck magazines. After the massive transformation, his truck is now one of the biggest sport trucks to ever roam the streets of Texas.

As a kid, Forrest was captivated by the monster trucks he saw in stadiums, fairgrounds, and on television. The now infamous Silverado used to be his daily driver and mud-bogger during his high school years. According to him, it spent more time being dirty than it did clean. All this is in the verge of changing, when Forrest and his friend James had a quick trip to a local truck show. In the said event, James brought his Chevy Tahoe that is somewhat incomparable with Forrest’s untidy Silverado. This made Forrest decide on having his Silverado altered.

With the help of B&C to help out on the budget, his Silverado has undergone major changes. The front end of the truck received a four-link suspension that would locate a Dana 60 axle, taken from an ‘02 Ford Super Duty pickup. The B&C built its own crossover system. The rear of the truck had a three-link and a 1-ton rear axle, which were taken from an older Chevy truck. All the link bars were built from Schedule 80, 0.250 wall, 2-1/2-inch-diameter tubing, and pivot on urethane bushing ends. To provide the lift for the chassis, a quartet of King 14-inch stroke, 2-1/2-inch-diameter coilover shocks were custom-valved in-house and installed. Hotchkis 23mm sway bars were also employed to keep the Chevy from tipping over while running on the highways and side streets of The Lone Star State.

Power Pickup: the Chevrolet SS Silverado

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

High-performance vehicles such as the Chevrolet Corvette are revered for their awesome power and precision handling. Pickup trucks such as Silverado, on the other hand, are admired for their ability to carry both passengers and cargo efficiently and dependably on any road surface or off-road. Combining the best aspects of both vehicles, Chevrolet introduces the Silverado SS – The Corvette of Trucks – at this year’s SEMA show, the latest iteration of the original SS show truck.

“The first SS Silverado created an awareness and understanding of the performance limits of a pickup—this SS takes it to the next level,” said John C. Farris Jr., Chevy Silverado assistant brand manager-marketing.

This four-passenger, four-door pickup is powered by a 6.6-liter, overhead valve (OHV) aluminum LS1 V8 engine that produces 480 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 475 lb-ft of torque at 4800 rpm. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a short-throw, six-speed, rear-mounted manual transmission – the same transmission found in Corvette models. Helping to hit that unique Corvette exhaust note are ceramic-coated, stainless steel, tubular, four-into-one headers with 1 ¾-inch primaries and 3-inch collectors. Dual 3-inch exhaust system, dual 3-inch inlet and dual 3-inch outlet muffler and aluminum exhaust tips complete the exhaust system.

Any performance vehicle must also reward the driver with precise “ride on rails” handling, and Silverado SS is no exception. It features four-wheel independent short- and long-arm (SLA) suspension and adjustable front and rear air ride suspension that allows the driver to vary the ride height to best suit the situation – lower for highway cruising or higher for greater clearance. Power rack-and-pinion steering ensures precise steering and four-wheel disc brakes featuring 14-inch rotors, six-piston calipers in the front and four-piston calipers in the rear provide sure, safe stops. Antilock brakes are also standard on this vehicle.

Inside, Silverado SS rewards driver and passengers with a number of features that even make Corvette owners envious, beginning with the ability to share SS performance and handling attributes with more passengers. Four bucket seats with carbon fiber inserts create a comfortable and luxurious environment. A blue electroluminescent instrument cluster lends a “floating” appearance to the speedometer, tachometer, engine temperature and oil pressure gauges. A new in-dash information screen, meanwhile, provides suspension and performance information. Four-point, cam-lock safety harnesses enhance passenger safety and a Corvette steering wheel with a custom logo reinforces the SS’s connection to the American icon.

Seen from the exterior, it’s clearly evident that the redder-than-red SS is no ordinary Silverado; its performance cues are evident from any angle. Up front, SS features a molded front fascia with integrated brake-cooling ducts, a new front grille with integrated Chevy Bow Tie and projector beam headlamp assemblies. The domed hood is made of a carbon fiber material and the cowl has been raised 2.5 inches, creating a flowing appearance. The composite front fenders with integrated wheel flares accentuate the performance element of this vehicle and house the nickel-plated wheels (20″ front, 22″ rear) and custom Goodyear tires. Integrated rocker panels on the lower bodyside further accent the Silverado SS’s “ready to pounce” appearance.

Also unique to the Silverado SS is the integration of the cab and pickup box. Gone is the normal space between those two body parts. The smooth molded one-piece appearance is refined, dramatic, and an instant classic.

Kelly Sutton and her Silverado

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

Kelly “Girl” Sutton is one of a kind. She is one of very few women, and the only person with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS), known to race in NASCAR. Now in her second full season in the Goody’s Dash Series, a NASCAR Touring series, Sutton has established a reputation as a formidable competitor — finishing her rookie season third in rookie points and 12th overall, beating out 75 other drivers.

A third generation racecar driver, Sutton has racing in her blood. Even as a toddler, it was no surprise to find her under the hood of one of her father’s racecars. Her own racing career began at the early age of 10, progressing steadily for six years until it came to a screeching halt with Sutton’s diagnosis of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis in 1988.
Initial symptoms of tingling and numbness on her right side, combined with overwhelming fatigue were just the first indications something was wrong. By the time Sutton was 25, she found herself in a wheelchair. Her dreams of racing seemed to have slipped away.

But Sutton did not give up. Her family would not let her. Together they found the right balance of diet, exercise, and a daily injection of COPAXONE® (glatiramer acetate injection), that allowed Sutton to regain the life she had always wanted.
Today, in addition to driving at speeds of up to 160 miles per hour in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series with a Chevrolet Silverado, Sutton is a busy mother of two and an inspirational speaker. Away from the track, she travels across the United States, sharing her story with others living with MS. She is a testament to the power of attitude and determination.
