Chevy Hubcaps
Chevy Hubcaps: Function, Installation, Common Problems and Other Info
Hubcaps or center caps are used to cover and protect the wheel. It comes in various sizes, styles and brands such as Chevy hubcaps, Honda hubs, Mopar, Dodge, Ford,
Volkswagen and a lot more. Before, specifically
during the 1940's, hubcaps were attached on the vehicle to cover the lug nuts
holding the "hub" of the wheel's axle. Hubcaps before were smaller measuring six
inches in diameter. Later on, it grew bigger to cover the whole metal part or
the rim of the wheels, thus it was also called wheel covers.
Chevy hubcaps can be in plastic or metal. Plastic are lighter in weight and will
have little effect on the speed of the car. Metal hubcaps on the other hand are
heavy which can separate from the vehicle during increased speed. It is even more
costly. Plastic hubs coated with chrome can last longer. It has stronger resistance
against scratch and exposure to sun, weather, and salt. Chromed metals can react
with oxygen and salt and an easily be subjected to rust, pit, scale, or flake
after constant scratching.
Hubcaps that come off are the common complaints of users and buyers. It can be
traced down to several reasons such as broken clips, faulty installation, or damage
from contact with a curb. At times the collision with big potholes, bumps and
other road irregularities can knock off a hubcap. Heavier wheel covers have greater
possibility to come off easier compared with lighter plastic ones. To avoid faulty
installation, check and recheck to see if the component is evenly placed on the
entire wheel. Hubcaps or wheel covers must be mounted carefully. First, try fitting
the hubs in the position where it should be. Make sure that it is properly placed.
Then gently tap the sides of the cover using a special type of hubcap hammer.
Be gentle. Hard tapping can break the sensitive parts of the cover like the hub's
clips.
Another common reason for falling wheel covers is the design of the product.
Some hubcaps are made too tight while some are too lose. Both imbalances can cause
the clips to crack or break off. Falling center caps can be damaged and cannot
be used again. One incident of a hubcap that comes off can lead to another and
thus it can become too damaged for the car. Good thing there were no reported
incidents for falling Chevy hubcaps given that it is made to suit the specific
specs of the vehicle it is intended for.
